Your bathroom is one of the areas of the home where you start and end the day, so wanting one that has all the key furnishings you need is sensible. The good news is, building a beautiful bathroom is possible without breaking your budget. If you want a new bathroom or need to update an existing one, follow these tips for a hassle-free home project.
Choose the Right Paint
Specialized paints for wet and moist environments are the optimal choice if you choose not to have floor-to-ceiling bathroom tiles. Aside from picking the right color that will tie-in with the rest of your house, a good bathroom paint should have:
- A washable finish: Bathroom walls require the occasional scrub down since they are prone to the same contaminants you try to rid yourself of when you take a bath.
- Mildew resistance: Mold and mildew can grow as fast as 48 hours on cold, damp surfaces. Be sure to use materials that will deter any unwanted fungi growth in your shower.
- Non-absorbent structure: Some paints have a tighter bond, which acts as a semi-hydrophobic surface. This stops moisture build-up and helps prevent wall deterioration.
Plan the Tiling Layout
If you plan to install tiles, you can cover a whole wall from floor to ceiling, or tile only the high-impact areas. Either way, take note of the layout of all the plumbing and electrical provisions. You will need to pre-cut and drill around the tiles to fit valves and electric sockets. Doing so will save you both time and money.
You can also choose to install tiles only on the floors and the insides of shower stalls. These parts of the bathroom are medium to high traffic areas, and they get wet the most, so it’s ideal to put some layer of protection. Installing fewer tiles is also generally faster and cheaper since you’ll have less to cover.
Pick the Appropriate Counter Tops
The bathroom vanity is usually the focal point of the room. It comes in different shapes, sizes, and materials, and it’s easily customizable to represent any style. Choose from a selection of granite, marble, quartz, or more common materials like concrete, tile, and wood to complete the look of your bathroom.
